READ UP FOR SUMMER

As amazing as the great outdoors gets during the summer, kicking back with an incredible book can be just as magical! Whether it’s a classic tome or the must-have pulp of the season, there’s no greater way to laze the days away than to get lost in a great story. To celebrate, we collected some of our favorite books as well as the greatest independent bookstores we know.

OUR FAVORITE INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORES

Powell’s Books, Portland – this isn’t so much a bookstore as a literary landmark: the biggest used and new bookstore in the world, it takes up an entire city block, stacked with 3,500 unique sections of one million books. Its convenient location in the heart of downtown Portland’s Pearl District makes it the perfect place to get lost in great stories and ideas. City of Books, indeed!

Strand Book Store, New York City – Head over to Manhattan’s East Village and you’ll find The Strand’s “18 Miles Of Books” – everything from new to used and rare offerings. Hailed by the New York Times as the undisputed king of NYC’s indy bookstores, The Strand’s fame has made it a guest player in movies, TV… even a namecheck in a Steely Dan song!

Weller Book Works, Salt Lake City – Sometimes the charm in a place comes from the people who populate it, and that’s no exception here. A new, used and rare bookstore founded in 1929, the family business continues with legions of followers (now located in historic Trolley Square).

The Elliott Bay Book Company, Seattle – A great selection, relaxed environment and frequent readings, events and clubs make this multilevel bookstore one of Seattle’s most dynamic literary offerings.

The Last Bookstore, Los Angeles – true to the creative spirit of LA, this downtown bookstore is the city’s largest – offering everything from used and new tomes to vinyl, graphic novels, DVDs and local art. A true creative (and let’s face it, tourist) destination for people who are avid about their books, music and more.

Sundance Books and Music, Reno – Want to find your favorite new novel in a grand old mansion? Sundance is the place to go! A totally unique two-story historic house, this awesome store is clearly beloved by its staff and visitors, and perfectly houses everything from books to records, gifts and more.

Pages, Manhattan Beach – Right next to SKECHERS’ headquarters, this cool beach town bookseller offers loads of fiction, nonfiction and kids’ tales, along with gifts and greeting cards.

Here are some great books to get lost in this summer – courtesy of our team!

“I would suggest the following two ideas: 1) Diving into The Opposite of Loneliness: Essays and Stories by Marina Keegan; 2) Rereading the entire Harry Potter series (I don’t do this, but have friends who do).”

– Lena

“A few of my favorite books: The Pact by Jodi Picoult; The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins; Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom.”

– Janice

***

1984 by George Orwell. These are interesting times we live in, so I plan on spending a few beach days reading this happy go-lucky novel to keep my mind off the real world because Big Brother and the Cult of Personality certainly isn’t at all relevant today.”

– Gunther

“Most of my books happen at bedtime with the kid – and a couple of my current favorites are Tap the Magic Tree and Mix it Up! They’re really fun, interactive stories that really get children engaged on every page.”

– Deanna

“I have two books, sometimes three, going at once. Fiction, non-fiction, and introspective. I just finished Lucky Boy by Shanthi Seharan. So topical (way to close to reality), poignant and well-written. Thoroughly recommend but hold on! So now I’m looking for the next fiction and I think it will be A Separation by Katie Kitamura—it’s smaller (perfect for my work trip this month) and is said to be literary and a thriller (perfect for that long plane ride). As far as non-fiction, John Doe’s Under the Big Black Sun: A Personal History of L.A. Punk.—loving it!”

– Ashley

GOODBYE COOL WEATHER, HELLO SUMMER WITH LORNA WEIGHTMAN

Is it summer? Really? It’s arrived? Well it’s the first few days of June and so far in Dublin the weather is looking promising! I’m trying to break in my summer wardrobe gradually, and sensibly and for my first blog post with Skechers for the month, I am focusing on sliders. Now when I say sliders you’ll automatically think of the sandal, but I am taking the name for the Double Up – Sleek Street slip-on trainers which are honestly, my new favourite pair. The white matches everything and I am currently styling them with cut off jeans so show them off. I am also styling them with maxi dresses (more of that to come this month) so show that you don’t have to wear heels with a dress. You can completely change the look of something more formal by changing up your footwear.

Now here’s the technical stuff. They have a great padded collar around the edge of the shoe so they don’t rub. A very, very important factor. They also have Skechers memory foam so you have a nice cushion for your foot for your summer holidays. They also have a 1.5 inch “flatform” for some height which I think is great since you always think runners are going to be flat.

They come in white, but there is also a black style if you want to stick to darker shades. Check out the full collection here.

SHOE HACKS YOU’LL LOVE

For those who love to think out of the box on sprucing up their sneaks and sandals, we have a slew of hacks for you! Whether your shoes are too tight, need a little refresh or you just want to give them a totally new look, these style secrets are a great way to ramp up your shoe game. Read on for easy, fun ways to make your Skechers go the extra mile!

STRETCH YOUR STYLE

Got a pair of sandals that you totally adore, but are a little too tight? Put your socks to work! Slip a thick pair and wear your shoes over them (at home is fine; we’ll keep this look just between us) and your shoes will gradually loosen up over time. Whip off those socks… and your perfectly stretched soles are ready to rock!

POWDERPUFF GIRL

Some soles can squeak a little when you walk (not that ours do!)… and the cure-all may be right in your closet! Just shake a little baby powder into your shoes, and it can keep the sound at bay. Plus, baby powder has a nice scent for those who want to freshen up their soles.

TEA TIME

For shoes that have a little more stink, something as simple as tea bags can do the trick! The below Skech-Knit shoe is great for letting your foot naturally breathe, but for those styles that don’t breathe as well, tea bags are a totally natural alternative to shoe deodorants, and you can make them any scent you please… just raid your kitchen cabinets for your personal favorites, drop a couple dry, unused tea bags into smelly shoes and let them sit for a wonderfully scented solution to old soles.

LOVE TO LACE

Here’s a totally easy way to spruce up your lace-up sneaks, without buying anything at all! Skechers sneakers come with two sets of laces, so you can always go crazy with a new color. Explore new ways to lace up your sneaks – a simple new pattern can give your old soles an entirely new look. It’s especially great for updating kids’ sneaks; invite them to come up their own new designs… they’ll soon be showing them off to their friends at school!

FRAYED NOT

Are your laces getting a little frayed at the edges? Extend their life with a couple pieces of tape from your drawer… just wrap them around the ends, and you’re done! It’s simple and quick – and when you get home, you can always switch them out with your second set of Skechers shoelaces!

SKECHERS CELEBRATES 25 YEARS

Today we’re celebrating 25 years of fabulous footwear! It all started on May 29, 1992—when the Skechers brand was born in a beach house in quaint Manhattan Beach, California. What kicked off with a single logger boot style that defined the grunge era has since grown over a quarter century to become an award-winning icon delivering comfortable lifestyle and athletic footwear worn by men, women and children around the globe.

In honor of this magical milestone and the holiday that we like to call #WorldSkechersDay, we reached out across six continents to invite some fantastic people to share their stories and experiences with Skechers over the years. From fashion experts and family bloggers to healthy living enthusiasts and athletes running the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon—this eclectic group understands how 25 years of comfort, style and performance has come to define Skechers. Check it out below along with some behind the scenes fun shots from the set.

The party extends to Facebook where we’ve gathered some cool images submitted by fans worldwide to help mark 25 years of Skechers footwear. Check out the gallery on our page and you can submit your own awesome all-time Skechers style photos on Instagram with #Skechers25USA. We would also love to hear your thoughts on Skechers during this celebration so let us know in the comments what you love about Skechers, your favorite Skechers memory, or what you’d love to see from Skechers in the next 25 years!

SKECHERS Henry Street Store Launch

We’ve officially re-launched our Skechers store on Henry Street… WHAT a day it was! We had a team of fantastic bloggers in new SKECHERS apparel and SKECHERS shoes. The bloggers have a mix of our Skechers Performance and lifestyle ranges… you can agree with us that they all look fab, right?

We started the morning off with a fitness class hosted by our fabulous brand ambassador Derval O’Rourke and her trainer Billy O’Regan. They were so creative with the workouts, and the girls certainly had a lot of fun taking part.

The fitness class was followed by a bit of mingling and healthy snacks… what girl doesn’t love a chat and some food? We had juices and protein balls from Derval O’Rourke’s FitFoodie range. Delicious! It was great catching up with all of the girls, and seeing what their favourite styles were and why.

Once the blogger fitness event was over, we moved on to the press, which was just as exciting! We had loads of amazing Irish celebrities and sport stars call in to check out the new store, and of course pick out some new SKECHERS for themselves. Pippa O’Connor (Irish influencer), James Kavanagh (internet sensation), Shane Byrne (rugby legend) and Keith Andrews (soccer star) called in, to name a few!

A huge thank you to all who attended our event, including Joanne Larby (@makeupfairypro), Niamh Cullen (@niamhcullenx), Sian Walton (@sianwalton_), Siobhan O’Hagan (@ohfitness_ie), Hollie Campbell (@hollie_campbell), Leanne Moore (@leannemoorefitness), Laura Dorgan (@lauradorganfitness), Lorna Weightman (@Styleisleirl), Jodie Wood (@jodiewood_), Lynn Kelly (@lynnkelly_) and Tiffany Brien (@tiffanybrien). All of you made the day such a huge success!

SKECHERS CELEBRATES EARTH DAY

Many of us are making plans for Earth Day tomorrow (from cleaning up parks and preserves, to simply being mindful of our impact on our environment) – and we as a company thought that a wonderful way to celebrate the natural beauty of our planet, would be to spotlight some of our styles in one of the world’s most beautiful epicenters.

We reached out to the ever-talented photographer Megan Costello, who gave us a gorgeous glimpse of life on the beaches of Oahu – and she put our styles right at the center of the action: everything from our sandals (Reggae – Decked Out, Reggae – Loopy and Upgrades – Sailin for her, Pelem – Emiro for him) to sneakers (Skech-Air – Element for her, Burst – Shinz for him).

Her images are a breathtaking, moving reminder of how captivating our planet is, and what we stand to gain when we take simple steps to preserve it.

We may not all live on a beach in Hawaii, but there is beauty in every corner of our world. Whether we’re going digital, toting personal grocery bags or riding our bikes a little more often, there are endless ways to start new habits that don’t just improve our planet, but also make us proactive, engaged participants in the world around us.

How are you making a difference on Earth Day and the days that follow? Tell us in the comments!
