Skechers Performance

Keith Whyte

Keith Whyte is our kinda guy! He is an ultra-marathon runner from Ennis, Co. Clare who began running in 2007. Keith is the National record holder for 100km and Brand ambassador for the Skechers Performance Division. He has many wins under his belt… including his win at the 100k Ultra Marathon in the Antarctic battling conditions like -33 degrees! Keith is on his way back from injury, and we caught up with him a few days ago.

What’s your greatest achievement to date?

My greatest achievement to date was when I won the British and Irish 100km championships (Anglo Celtic Plate) in Wales in 2012. It was my first international win representing Ireland and I became the first ever male Irish athlete to win in the history of the event.

What’s your greatest achievement while wearing a Skechers shoe?

My best performance in a Skechers shoe was when I broke the Irish national record for 100km in Belgium in 2013. It was one of those days where everything clicked and all the hard training really paid off. On the day I wore my Skechers GOrun 2s.

What’s your favourite Skechers running shoe?

My favourite Skechers running shoe is a tossup between the Skechers GOrun and Skechers Ultra Road. I usually train in the Ultra Road and race in the Skechers GOrun.

What are you working towards at the moment?

At the moment I’m in the gym a lot as I’m returning from injury, but my main target this year will be an attempt to run under 7 hrs for 100km. I currently hold the Irish national record for the distance (7.02:42).

What do you like to do to relax?

There’s not a lot of down time between work and training, but on the rare occasion I do get some I’ll just chill out on the sofa and catch up on some sport on TV.

What advice would you give to someone looking to take up ultra-marathon running?

For anyone looking to take the step up from the marathon and explore the world of ultra-running I would suggest that you have a few marathons under your belt already. Maybe start with distances such as 50k or 40 miles. There are quite a few races of these distances around and they will give you a good base to start with before you attempt 100km or longer. Always respect the distance and pace yourself accordingly. It’s not the distance that will kill you, it’s the speed – so proper pacing is very important. Covering the distance should be your main concern rather than getting caught up with times. As you increase your training mileage, you will build a good aerobic engine that will enable you to then concentrate on increasing your speed over the distance.

How does it feel being a Skechers brand ambassador?

I’m very honoured and privileged to be a brand ambassador for Skechers. We have a great relationship which is now in its 5th year, and to have such a huge global footwear giant such as Skechers behind me is a massive support to my career.

We don’t know about ye but Keith has definitely given us a bit of inspo to get out and get running! Join in on the fun and shop the Skechers GOrun collection here
